August 6,2011

at 9 pm they shot off the canyons, it was very impressive

actually cooked food on an open fire with cast iron skillets and kettles

inside one of the tents

Fort D Civil War Site...constructed in the summer of 1861 by Union troops under the leadership of Lt. John Wesley Powell, For D is the only remaining fort out of four Civil War forts that once protected the city of Cape Girardeau from Confederate attack.  The earthwork walls remain intact and historical signage throughout the fort's grounds bring its storied past to life...

Today we slept in and went and got some groceries...then we drove around some, then later we went to a Civil War re-enactment, around 9pm tonight they fired off the cannon's...I got the sound but too dark to see what they were doing.

several people suggested this place to eat...they literally throw rolls to you when you want one, and they are just out of the oven

they walk around with black-eyed peas, macaroni with tomatoes, fried okra, scalloped potatoes with onions, they are called "pass arounds" all you can eat of those items plus rolls, the rolls were soooo good...they also had a fork and knife in a little bag in a bucket with paper towels as napkins...and we asked for water, and they brought us these massive jugs, probably about 2liter...wow

Kage House the other side of the stop sign

Looking from the bedroom window down the street at the Mississippi River, we had a lovely walk

Had ice cream tonight at this cute old place
It was a very pretty drive, from Branson to Cape Girardeau, between the two places some where on the road we ran into a storm, and it rained really hard and lightening and thundered right overhead, it has been over cast yesterday and today...but the heat hasn't been too bad

We got up and had breakfast with Heather and Wade, Papa had to play a couple of "Go fishing" games, and then we left to go to Branson, Missouri...it was a really nice drive...we checked into our motel, and then checked out where we needed to go to see the outdoors theater, of "The Shepherd of the Hills"...ate dinner at Cracker Barrel, then went back to the outdoor theater...before the program started they had kids come down to the arena and were handed the biggest bullfrogs I have ever seen, they had frog races...the performance was very nicely done...lasted about 2 hours

Wednesday morning we left Clark's place and met April and boys at "The Porch" for breakfast...the boys came right to us...then we went to their house, where papa had to play Lego's with the boys...kind of hung out there for awhile, then had lunch and then went to "Half price Books" the boys like to look at books, and Logan found the step stool, so he was pushing it around the store...we told the boys we were going to leave, and we will come back for 3,4 or 5 days, and Conner said "5 days Nana" it made me feel good...I got a call just before we left to go to Heather's from Wade, he says, "Nana when are you coming"? Heather said she told him we would be there after his nap, and we weren't there...so then we got on the rode, to Marcus and Heather's and got there around 8 pm...Wade wasn't sure right at first...but warmed up fast...we barely had time to eat some dinner and Wade was wanting to play Blokus, so we played a couple of games, then he wanted to play Candy Land, and then he wanted to play trucks, but it was time for bed...we had a nice time.

Tip and Patti took us to the metro Gold Line, we rode that from South Pasadena to the Union Station, and then caught the Flyaway to the airport...we sat in the airport for about 3 hours, people watching and just being together...arrived in Texas about 11 pm, Clark was there, it was good to see him again, even if it had been 4 days before at home...we rented a car, and followed Clark to his very nice apartment in Mansfield.

Dad and Mom Tarwater took us to Ventura, where Tip and Patti met us there and brought us back to Los Angeles...they drove us around downtown LA, and went to the train station to see where we would catch the flyaway from Union Station to LAX...the restaurant "Philippe" is a neat little place to eat, sawdust on the floor and the ice tea is only 65 cents...this is the place where Tip and Patti would go out on a date 53 years ago...their anniversary is August 1st...so it was a special place to us, to be able to reminisce with them.
